How to Remove SD Card Write Protection

 

When we try to remove data from an SD Card, sometimes we get an error saying this card is write protected, which means the SD Card which you have inserted in the device is write protected by the user which doesn’t allow you to copy or delete or move data from SD Card to other device and vice-versa. In order to copy or move or remove data from an SD Card, first you have to remove SD Card Write protection. Whenever you see this message in future while using an SD Card, just follow one of the following methods to remove SD Card write protection so that you can easily copy/ delete/ move data from it.

How to Remove SD Card Write Protection

Method 1 : By Unlocking your SD Card

An SD Card has a protection lock at the left side. You could see a small switch at the left side of an SD Card where you could see lock and unlock option. Just take the key to Unlock side and the protection of the card will be removed and you should be able to view data from the Card.



Method 2 : Formatting an SD Card from Windows

If you are using a Windows PC, you need to format your Card to remove write protection from it. It’s quite a simple process which needs a few steps to be followed. Here are the steps!

Step 1 :

Launch My Computer to view all available Hard Drives in your system. If you have inserted an SD card, it will show up right here.

Step 2 :

Now, go to the drive which is write protected and right click on it.

Step 3 :

A menu will be appeared with a number of options. Just select Format option from here.

Step 4 :

You will be asked whether to move ahead or not, just click Ok button to format the card.



Step 5 : 



It will take a couple of seconds to complete the formatting. Soon, you’ll be notified that the Card has been formatted.



This is how you can remove Write protection from SD Card on a Windows PC. If you are a bit advanced and using a Mac, just follow below steps to remove such write protection from any external devices.

Method 3 : Formatting an SD Card from Mac

Step 1 :

First insert an SD Card to your Mac.

Step 2 :



Go to Applications folder from the Dock.



Step 3 :

From this Window, you need to select Disk Utility option.



Step 4 :



Disk Utility menu will be right there on your desktop. At the left side, you could see available external drives. If you have inserted a protected SD Card, it will show up right here. Do select it.



Step 5 :

Once you select the drive, you could see an erase option at the right side. Select Erase option and then hit Ok button.

Formatting of an SD Card will take place. After a while, you will be notified with a message saying your Card has been formatted. By now, you can use your card anytime.
